Repairs to storm damaged schools advance

With the September 1 deadline for the start of schools now approaching, school custodians and others are working seven-day weeks to finish repairing the damage done by flooding on July 22 and prepare schools for classes as usual.

"You should have seen this just a few weeks ago," the district's business manager, Shawn Yde, said in guiding a visitor around the lower level of the high school amidst the work on Sunday. The level was damaged by water that poured in through window wells during the record downpour.

On Nov. 3, 2009, the voters of Whitefish Bay approved two bond referendum questions that authorized $22.6 million in maintenance and improvement work on five district schools. Following the vote, the Yes Yes Progress Committee, composed of area citizens, was formed to monitor the post election implementation of this work and provide updates about the progress.

The Plans

Preliminary plans developed by the school district's Facilities Study Committee have been the centerpiece of improvement preparation until now. Those recommendations will be revisited in discussions over the coming months as the final details are set. Information about that process will be available on this website up until the start of construction.
